What is MMSCFD? Natural gas volume units explained for Nigerian industry

Published 1 October 2026 · Gasland Horizon

MMSCFD means million standard cubic feet per day. It is the unit the gas industry uses to state how much natural gas a pipeline delivers, a field produces, or a customer consumes. When Gasland Horizon says its flagship Ibusa area has audited industrial demand in excess of 4 MMSCFD, it means those customers together need more than four million standard cubic feet of gas every day.

Breaking the unit down

  • MM is a thousand thousand, written with two Roman-numeral Ms. So MMSCF is a million standard cubic feet and MSCF is a thousand.
  • SCF is a standard cubic foot: the volume of gas at a reference temperature and pressure, usually 60°F and 14.7 psia, so that volumes are comparable whatever the conditions in the pipe.
  • D is per day. The same volume without the D, MMSCF, is a quantity rather than a rate.

You will also meet MMSCMD (million standard cubic metres per day, common in India and Europe), SCM or Sm³ (a standard cubic metre, the metric building block) and MMBtu (million British thermal units, an energy unit that gas is often priced in). Some documents drop the S and write MMCFD; it means the same thing in practice.

Quick conversions for 1 MMSCFD

These are approximate rules of thumb for pipeline-quality natural gas. Exact figures depend on the gas composition and the equipment using it.

1 MMSCFD is roughlyValue
Standard cubic metres per day28,300 Sm³/day
MMSCMD0.028 MMSCMD (1 MMSCMD ≈ 35.3 MMSCFD)
Energy per dayabout 1,000 MMBtu (about 1,050 GJ)
Continuous gas-engine generationabout 4 to 5 MW
Diesel with the same energy contentabout 27,000 litres per day

Put the other way round: a factory running 1 MW of generation around the clock on gas engines needs roughly 0.2 to 0.25 MMSCFD. A 5 MW captive plant needs about 1 MMSCFD. A 20 MW independent power plant needs around 4 MMSCFD, which is the scale of demand already documented at Ibusa.

What it means for a Nigerian factory

Industrial customers rarely think in MMSCFD. They think in litres of diesel per month, kilowatts of load and hours of running time. The Energy Data Form captures exactly those figures and converts them into a gas volume, so a connection can be sized and a supply contract written in the units the gas industry uses. A facility burning 100,000 litres of diesel a month, for example, needs on the order of 0.15 MMSCFD once engine efficiencies are taken into account, and the switch typically cuts its fuel bill by 40 to 55 percent.

In Gasland Horizon's distribution areas, the committed volumes read as follows:

  • Ibusa, Delta State (flagship area and field operations base): audited industrial demand in excess of 4 MMSCFD across anchor customers.
  • Awka, Anambra State: approximately 2.85 MMSCFD of committed industrial demand across anchor customers.

Frequently asked

MMSCFD stands for million standard cubic feet per day. MM is the Roman-numeral style shorthand for a thousand thousand (a million), SCF is standard cubic feet, and D is per day. It is the standard unit for quoting natural gas supply and demand volumes in Nigeria and internationally.

One MMSCFD is about 28,300 standard cubic metres per day (28,317 Sm3/day), because one standard cubic foot is 0.028317 cubic metres. In India and some other markets the equivalent unit is MMSCMD, million standard cubic metres per day; 1 MMSCMD is roughly 35.3 MMSCFD.

As a rule of thumb, 1 MMSCFD of pipeline-quality natural gas carries roughly 1,000 MMBtu of energy per day and can run about 4 to 5 MW of continuous gas-engine generation at typical electrical efficiencies. The exact figure depends on gas composition and the generator's heat rate.
